New and Young Workers: Supervision and Task Suitability
Experienced workers must guide and protect new staff who may not yet see the dangers on site.
Why this matters
- New workers are among the most likely to be injured on a construction site. They often lack the experience to spot hazards and might feel pressured to work fast to impress their team.
- In our region, the heat and the speed of work add extra risk. A young or new worker might not know when to stop or how to use a specific tool safely, even if they say they do.
- Supervision is not just about watching. It is about making sure the task matches the person's skills. Assigning a complex job to someone who started yesterday is a risk for everyone.
Talking points
- Pair every new worker with an experienced buddy who knows the site rules.
- Supervisors must give clear instructions and ask the worker to repeat them back to confirm understanding.
- Check that the worker is physically fit for the task: especially if it involves heavy lifting or working in the sun.
- Never leave an inexperienced person alone to perform high risk tasks like working at height or near heavy plant.
- Encourage new starters to ask questions: it is better to ask once than to make a mistake once.
- Watch for signs of fatigue or heat stress, as new staff may not be used to the Gulf climate yet.
- If a worker looks hesitant or unsure: stop, explain, and demonstrate the safe way again.
Ask the crew
- If you are new here today, do you know who your supervisor and buddy are?
- What should you do if you are asked to use a tool you have never used before?
- Why is it dangerous to give a new worker a high risk task on their first day?
