Shortcuts and Time Pressure: Recognizing When You Are Being Rushed
No deadline is worth your life: if you feel rushed, stop and speak up.
Why this matters
- Rushing is among the most common causes of workplace accidents. When we feel under pressure to finish a task quickly, our brains stop looking for hazards and focus only on the clock. This is when we make mistakes that cannot be undone.
- A shortcut might save five minutes, but an injury can stop a project for days or change your life forever. True efficiency comes from doing the job correctly the first time, not from skipping safety steps to meet a deadline.
Talking points
- Identify the signs of rushing: feeling panicky, heartbeat rising, or forgetting basic tools.
- Never skip the Permit to Work or the pre-start check just to start a task five minutes earlier.
- Do not bypass safety guards or skip wearing your harness because the job is 'only going to take a second.'
- If a supervisor or a colleague is pushing you to work at a speed that feels unsafe, you must use your Stop Work Authority.
- Plan your tasks during the morning briefing: if you know the steps, you are less likely to feel panicked later.
- Remember that a rushed job is often a poor-quality job that will need to be fixed later: doubling the risk.
Ask the crew
- What is one safety step that people usually skip when they are in a hurry?
- How does your body feel when you are being rushed? Do you notice the physical signs?
- If you see a teammate taking a shortcut to save time, what should you say to them?
