Complacency: The Danger of Doing it Many Times
Familiarity does not mean the hazard has gone away.
Why this matters
- When we do the same job every day, our brain starts to work on autopilot. We stop seeing the hazards that were obvious on our first day on the site. This is called complacency, and it is among the most common causes of accidents for experienced workers.
- Experience is a good thing, but it can also make us overconfident. An experienced worker who stops following safety rules because the job feels easy is at high risk. The hazard remains exactly the same, no matter how many times you have done the task.
Talking points
- Treat every task as if it is your first time doing it today.
- Never skip a safety step or a check just because nothing went wrong yesterday.
- Take 30 seconds to look at your work area before starting a routine job.
- Use your checklists even for simple tasks: they are there to stop your brain from forgetting the basics.
- Avoid distractions: if you are thinking about lunch or your phone while working, you are not focused on the hazard.
- Challenge your colleagues if you see them taking shortcuts because they are comfortable with the risk.
Ask the crew
- What is a job you do every day that could become dangerous if you stop paying attention?
- Have you ever caught yourself skipping a small safety step because you were in a rush?
- How can we help each other stay focused when the work feels repetitive?
