Waste Segregation: More Than Just Cleaning
Segregating waste correctly prevents fires, cuts, and chemical reactions that could harm you.
Why this matters
- Throwing everything into one bin is easy, but it is dangerous. When we mix sharp metal offcuts with wood or plastic, the next person to handle that waste gets a deep cut. If we mix oily rags with dry cardboard, we create a serious fire risk in the desert heat.
- A messy bin or an overfilled skip is a hazard for the whole team. Items fall out and hit people below. Chemicals leak and create slippery floors. Proper segregation means every hazard is kept in its own place.
Talking points
- Check the color-coding or signs on every bin before you throw anything away.
- Keep sharp metal scraps in the designated metal skips to prevent puncture wounds for handlers.
- Never mix liquids or chemicals with general waste: they can react or cause fires.
- Place oily rags and soaked materials in closed metal containers to stop them from catching fire in the sun.
- Do not overfill skips: if the waste is above the top edge, it can fall during lifting or transport.
- If you find a bin that is full or wrongly filled, report it to your supervisor immediately.
Ask the crew
- Where is the nearest skip for hazardous or chemical waste in our work area?
- What is the biggest danger of mixing wood with sharp metal offcuts?
- Why must we never throw aerosols or batteries into the general waste bin?
