End of Shift: Securing the Workplace Before You Leave
The shift is only finished when the work area is safe for the next person and secure against the wind.
Why this matters
- Leaving a site messy or unsecured at the end of the day creates hazards for the night shift or the crew arriving tomorrow morning. Many accidents happen in the first hour of a shift because of the mess left behind by the previous team.
- In our region, strong winds can pick up suddenly overnight. Loose plywood, plastic sheets, or empty buckets can become dangerous flying objects if they are not tied down or stored correctly. A safe site is a tidy site.
Talking points
- Clean as you go and do a final sweep. Remove all debris, food waste, and offcuts to the designated bins.
- Secure all loose materials. Stack timber neatly and weight down or tie down any materials that could be moved by high winds.
- Isolate and switch off. Check that all power tools are unplugged and that gas cylinders are closed and stored in their cages.
- Check all floor openings and edges. Ensure that every guardrail is secure and every hole cover is fixed in place before you walk away.
- Store your tools properly. Do not leave equipment lying on the ground where it can be damaged or cause a trip hazard.
- Close and lock access points. If you opened a gate or a hatch, it is your responsibility to close it or hand it over to the next person.
- Complete your handover. If a task is unfinished, tell your supervisor so the next team knows exactly what the status is.
Ask the crew
- What is one thing in your area that could blow away if the wind picks up tonight?
- Who is responsible for checking that the power is isolated before we leave?
- If you see a hole cover has been moved by someone else, should you leave it or fix it?
