Returning to Work: Getting Back to Site Safely
Take it slow and talk to your supervisor so you do not get hurt again.
Why this matters
- When you have been away for weeks or months, your body and mind are out of the site routine. You might be physically weaker or have forgotten small safety steps that kept you safe before. Site conditions often change while you are gone, meaning the hazards you remember might be different today.
- Rushing to do the same heavy work you did before your injury or break can cause a new injury. It is better to start steady and build your strength back up than to end up back in the hospital or at home. Your safety is more important than showing everyone you are still the strongest person on the crew.
Talking points
- Report to the site clinic or HSE office before you start your first shift back for a clearance check.
- Be honest about your limits: if your back, leg, or arm still hurts during a task, tell your supervisor immediately.
- Check your PPE: your boots, harness, and helmet might have become damaged or degraded if they were stored in a hot locker for a long time.
- Re-read the RAMS for your task because site layouts and methods often change while workers are away.
- Follow any light-duty instructions from the doctor, even if you feel like you can do more.
- Look out for your teammates: they might not know you have been away and might expect you to lift heavy things you are not ready for yet.
Ask the crew
- Who is the first person you should see when you arrive back on site after a long absence?
- Why is it dangerous to hide a lingering pain or physical limit from your supervisor?
- What specific parts of your equipment should you check before starting work today?
