ASP practice question: Slips, trips, falls

Question of the Day for Thursday, 5 November 2026

ASP · Safety Programs and Concepts
A pharmaceutical plant installs a new stair to a mezzanine in 2025. A fire door at the top opens directly onto the stair platform, which is 30 inches deep. With the door fully open, its swing leaves 20 inches of clear platform depth. Under 1910.25(b), what is the status?

Explanation

When a door opens directly onto a stairway, a platform must be provided and the door swing may not reduce its effective usable depth below 22 inches for platforms installed on or after January 17, 2017. The 20-inch value applies only to platforms installed before that date, so it does not cover a 2025 stair, and the rule sets no 24-inch figure. A 30-inch landing satisfies the separate landing depth rule but not the door swing rule. Source: 29 CFR 1910.25(b)(4) and (b)(5).
