ASP practice question: Fleet and driver safety

Question of the Day for Thursday, 22 October 2026

ASP · Safety Programs and Concepts
Inside a highway resurfacing work zone closed to public traffic, a dump truck with no rear view through its raised bed must back toward the paver. Its reverse alarm works, but near the milling machine it cannot be heard over the noise. Which practice meets OSHA's construction rule for backing this truck?

Explanation

Vehicles with an obstructed view to the rear may be used only if the reverse signal alarm is audible above the surrounding noise level, or if the vehicle is backed only when an observer signals that it is safe. An alarm that works but cannot be heard over the milling machine fails the first condition, so a spotter is required until the alarm is made audible. A horn and a strobe are useful, but neither is one of the two options the rule allows. Source: 29 CFR 1926.601(b)(4).
