ASP practice question: Hazard analysis methods
Question of the Day for Wednesday, 21 October 2026
ASP · Safety Programs and Concepts
While starting a job hazard analysis of a sheet metal shop's shear, the analyst watches the operator reach past a missing finger guard to align stock, within inches of the blade. The full JHA, built step by step with the operator's input, will take about two weeks. Following OSHA's JHA guidance, what should happen now?
Explanation
OSHA's JHA guidance says that if a hazard poses an immediate danger to an employee's life or health, the employer should act at once to protect the worker and not wait to complete the analysis. Ranking it with the other hazards is the tempting step, but ranking is meant for the hazards that need more study, not for an immediate danger already found. Retraining is an administrative fix that leaves the point of operation unguarded. Source: OSHA 3071, Job Hazard Analysis (2002 revised), Where do I begin, step 3.Practise more questions like this
