Active Supervision: More Than Just Watching
A good supervisor stays at the site to guide safety, not just to watch the clock.
Why this matters
- High-risk tasks like heavy lifting, deep digging, or entry into tight spaces are among the most dangerous jobs we do. These tasks need a dedicated pair of eyes to spot hazards before they become accidents. When a supervisor stays focused, the whole team stays safe.
- Good supervision is the bridge between the paperwork and the real work. It is not enough to have a Permit: a supervisor must ensure that the rules in that Permit are being followed every minute of the shift. If a supervisor leaves the area, the safety of the team can be compromised.
- Supervision is about support. It means having someone there who can make the tough call to stop work if things become unsafe. This presence gives every worker the confidence to do their job correctly without taking dangerous shortcuts.
Talking points
- The supervisor must be physically present at the work location for the entire duration of any high-risk task.
- They must lead a briefing before the job starts to ensure everyone knows their role and the emergency plan.
- A good supervisor checks that all PPE and safety equipment matches what is listed on the Permit to Work.
- They are responsible for keeping unauthorized people away from the exclusion zones of the high-risk work.
- Supervisors must monitor changes in the environment, such as wind speed, heat levels, or nearby moving plant.
- If the supervisor must leave the area for any reason, high-risk work must stop until they return or a competent replacement is found.
- The supervisor should be the first person you talk to if you notice a hazard that was not in the original plan.
Ask the crew
- What should we do with our tools if the supervisor has to leave the site during a critical lift?
- How does a supervisor help us if the site conditions suddenly become unsafe?
- Why is it important for the supervisor to talk to us before we start a high-risk job?
