Radiography Safety: Invisible Hazards and Exclusion Zones
Never cross a radiography barrier because the radiation hazard is invisible and can cause serious harm.
Why this matters
- Radiography is a common task on our sites used to check the quality of welds in pipes and tanks. It uses a radioactive source that sends out powerful rays. You cannot see, smell, or feel these rays, but they can damage your body's cells and cause long term health problems.
- Because the danger is invisible, we rely entirely on physical barriers and warning signals. If you ignore these, you are walking directly into a zone that can make you very sick without you even knowing it until it is too late.
Talking points
- Look for the radiation symbol: this is a yellow sign with a black or magenta three bladed shape called a trefoil.
- Stay behind the physical barriers: these are usually red and white tape or yellow and black tape placed at a calculated safe distance.
- Check for flashing lights: a flashing red or amber light means the radiography source is active and out of its container.
- Listen for sirens: many teams use a whistle or a siren to warn everyone that a test is about to start.
- Never take a shortcut: do not duck under or jump over barrier tape, even if the area looks empty and quiet.
- Obey the wardens: if a safety watchman tells you to move back or take a different path, follow their instructions immediately.
- Report any gaps: if you see a barrier that has fallen down or a sign that is missing, tell your supervisor right away.
Ask the crew
- What does a flashing red light at a cordoned area mean?
- Why is radiography more dangerous than other hazards like a moving vehicle?
- What should you do if you accidentally walk past a radiation barrier?
