Welding Safety: Fumes, Flashes, and Protection for All
Protect your lungs from invisible fumes and use screens to block the arc flash from your teammates.
Why this matters
- Welding fumes are not just smoke. They contain tiny metal particles that can settle deep in your lungs. Breathing these fumes over time is among the most common causes of long term respiratory illness in our industry. You might not feel it today, but the damage builds up every shift.
- The welding arc also creates intense ultraviolet light. This light can burn the surface of the eye, a painful condition known as arc eye. This risk is not only for the welder. Anyone walking past or working nearby can be blinded if the area is not properly shielded with screens.
Talking points
- Position the extraction hood as close as possible to the weld to pull fumes away from your breathing zone.
- Always set up welding screens or fire resistant curtains before you start to protect your colleagues from the flash.
- Check your welding helmet and filter lens for any cracks, scratches, or light leaks before every use.
- Ensure there is a good flow of fresh air if you are welding in a semi enclosed area or a workshop.
- Wear the correct grade of eye protection even under your welding helmet for double security.
- Keep your work area clear of flammable materials because sparks can travel long distances.
- Inform those working around you before you strike an arc so they can turn away or stay clear.
Ask the crew
- Where is the best place to put the extraction nozzle to catch the most smoke?
- Who are we protecting when we use welding screens around our work area?
- What should you do if you see a welding screen that is torn or missing?
