ASP practice question: Work-related musculoskeletal disorders (WMSDs)

Question of the Day for Saturday, 17 October 2026

ASP · Ergonomics
What is the defining characteristic of a 'cumulative trauma disorder'?

Explanation

A cumulative trauma disorder (CTD) develops gradually as repeated microtrauma from force, repetition, and awkward postures accumulates faster than tissues can recover - distinct from an acute injury caused by a single event. It is not caused by one sudden impact, is not chemical, and is not limited to older workers. Gradual accumulation of microtrauma defines a CTD. (Ref: cumulative trauma disorders.)
