Your Voice: Making the Toolbox Talk Count
The toolbox talk is for your safety: if you see a danger, you must speak up.
Why this matters
- This meeting is the most important five minutes of your day. It is the last chance to identify hazards before we start work. If we miss a risk here, someone could get hurt later.
- We are a team from many different countries. Good communication is our best safety tool. If you stay silent about a danger, you are not just risking your own life, you are risking the lives of your brothers on site.
Talking points
- Listen carefully to the hazards described for today, even if you have done the task many times before.
- Use this time to check your own PPE and tools while we discuss the plan.
- If you do not understand the instructions because of the language, ask for a translation or a simpler explanation immediately.
- Tell the supervisor if the site conditions have changed since yesterday, such as new holes or wet floors.
- Share any near misses from yesterday. We learn from mistakes to prevent accidents today.
- Safety is not just the job of the HSE officer. Every worker has the right and the duty to stop work if it is unsafe.
Ask the crew
- What should you do if you do not understand the safety plan for today?
- Why is it helpful to talk about a near miss that happened yesterday?
- Who is responsible for safety once this meeting is finished?
