Roadworks Safety: Staying Safe Around Live Traffic
Your visibility and the barriers you set up are the only things protecting you from moving vehicles.
Why this matters
- Working on or near roads is one of the most dangerous tasks on site. Drivers are often distracted, tired, or speeding, especially in the early morning or during rush hour. You cannot assume a driver has seen you just because you can see them.
- A small mistake in placing a cone or wearing a dirty vest can lead to a fatal accident. The traffic management setup is your physical shield. If it is weak, you are exposed to high speed impacts that nobody survives.
Talking points
- Always wear your high visibility clothing. It must be clean, fastened, and the reflective strips must not be worn out. If it is damaged, get a new one immediately.
- Set up traffic cones and barriers exactly as the traffic management plan shows. Do not reduce the length of the taper or skip signs to save time.
- Check your signs and cones throughout the shift. Wind, dust, or passing trucks can knock them over. A missing cone is a hole in your protection.
- Never step outside the protected work zone into a live traffic lane. Even a single step for a second can be fatal if a car is passing.
- Maintain a clear buffer zone between the traffic and your workspace. Do not store tools or materials right against the cones.
- Use a trained flagman or spotter if you are working close to the line. Their only job is to watch the traffic and alert you to danger.
- Ensure all temporary lighting is working if visibility is low due to morning mist, dust, or low sun.
Ask the crew
- What is the first thing you should do if a vehicle knocks over a cone in our work zone?
- Why is a dirty reflective vest a serious safety hazard on a road project?
- Where is the safest place to stand when you are taking a quick break from road work?
