Forklift Safety: Balance and Blind Spots
A forklift is a heavy tool that can tip or crush: always respect the stability triangle and stay clear of blind spots.
Why this matters
- Forklifts are among the most dangerous machines on site because they carry weight differently than cars. They steer from the back and have a high center of gravity. This makes them prone to tipping over if they turn too fast or carry loads too high.
- The area around a forklift is a high-risk zone. Operators have large blind spots, especially when a load is raised. If you are walking nearby, you must never assume the driver can see you. A simple mistake in judgment can lead to a fatal crushing accident.
Talking points
- Always keep the forks low to the ground while driving. Raising the load makes the machine unstable.
- Never exceed the capacity listed on the data plate: check the load center before lifting.
- Understand the stability triangle: the forklift is supported by three points. If the center of gravity moves outside this triangle, the truck will tip.
- Pedestrians must keep a safe distance of at least three meters from any moving forklift.
- Make eye contact with the operator and wait for a hand signal before walking near or behind the vehicle.
- Slow down and sound the horn at every corner, doorway, and intersection.
- Never use the forks to lift a person. Only use an approved man-basket if the permit allows it.
Ask the crew
- Where is the data plate located on your forklift, and what does it tell you?
- Why is it dangerous to turn a forklift while the forks are raised high?
- What is the first thing you should do if you need to cross the path of a moving forklift?
