Recognizing Heat Illness Early: Cramps to Heat Stroke
Stop work and seek shade immediately if you feel dizzy, confused, or stop sweating.
Why this matters
- Working in the Gulf heat is one of the biggest risks we face. Heat illness is dangerous because it can start as a simple muscle cramp and turn into a life-threatening Heat Stroke in just a few minutes.
- Your body has a cooling system (sweat), but when the humidity is high and the sun is strong, that system can fail. If your body temperature rises too high, your brain and organs can be permanently damaged.
- Early recognition is the difference between a quick water break and a trip to the hospital. We must watch ourselves and our buddies for the first signs of trouble.
Talking points
- Watch for Heat Cramps: Painful muscle spasms in your legs or stomach are the first warning that you are losing too much salt and water.
- Monitor your sweating: Heavy sweating is a sign your body is working hard to cool down. If you suddenly stop sweating but still feel burning hot, this is a medical emergency.
- Check for Heat Exhaustion: If you feel dizzy, have a headache, or feel sick to your stomach (nausea), your body is telling you to stop immediately.
- Recognize Heat Stroke: If a coworker becomes confused, starts acting 'drunk', or faints, their brain is overheating. This is Heat Stroke and it can be fatal.
- The Urine Test: Your urine should be clear or light yellow. If it is dark like apple juice, you are dangerously dehydrated and at high risk.
- Buddy System: You might not notice your own symptoms. Keep an eye on your partner. If they look pale or are moving slowly, tell them to rest.
- Immediate Action: If you feel symptoms, move to the shade, drink water (not ice-cold), and alert your supervisor or the site medic immediately.
Ask the crew
- What is the first thing you should do if you feel dizzy while working?
- If your buddy stops sweating but says he is 'fine', what should you do?
- What color should your urine be if you are drinking enough water?
