PPE: The Last Line of Defence
PPE is your last shield, but it cannot stop the accident from happening.
Why this matters
- Personal Protective Equipment is designed to reduce the severity of an injury. It does not remove the hazard itself. If a heavy object falls on your head, the hard hat helps you survive, but the hazard was the falling object. Our first job is to stop that object from falling.
- Relying only on PPE is dangerous. If the gear fails, or if you wear it slightly wrong, you have zero protection left. This is why we always look for better ways to work before we trust our lives to a piece of plastic or fabric.
Talking points
- Treat PPE as your backup plan, not your only plan.
- Always look for engineering controls first, such as fixed guards on machines or solid barriers around holes.
- Keep your PPE clean and stored correctly. Dirt and sunlight can make safety glasses and helmets weak.
- Check your equipment before every shift. If you see a crack in your helmet or a tear in your harness, stop and replace it.
- Never modify your gear. Do not drill holes in helmets for ventilation or cut fingers off gloves.
- Report hazards even if you are wearing the right gear. A trip hazard is still a danger even if you are wearing safety boots.
Ask the crew
- If a machine guard is missing, can your gloves really protect your fingers from the blade?
- Why is a physical barrier better than just wearing a high-vis vest near moving plant?
- What should you do if you find your safety goggles are too scratched to see through?
