Fire Prevention: Heat, Fuel, and Clean Sites
Keep heat away from fuel and keep your work area clean to stop fires before they start.
Why this matters
- Fire moves faster than you can run. In the dry Gulf wind, a small spark on a pile of cardboard or plastic becomes a disaster in seconds. Most site fires happen because we leave fuel near heat.
- Fuel includes everything that can burn: wood, oily rags, packing materials, and gas cylinders. Heat includes welding sparks, grinding, and even the midday sun on chemicals. If we keep these two things separate, we stay safe.
- A clean site is a safe site. Fire cannot spread if there is nothing to burn. Clearing your waste is the first step in fire protection.
Talking points
- Identify the fuel: Look for cardboard, wood, plastic, and oily rags. Do not let these pile up in corners or under stairs.
- Control the heat: If you are welding or grinding, you must have a fire blanket or a shield. Keep sparks away from rubbish.
- Storage safety: Store gas cylinders upright and secure. They must be kept in the shade and away from any hot work zones.
- Smoking rules: Only smoke in the designated smoking shelter. Never throw cigarette butts in the trash or on the ground.
- Clear access: Never block a fire extinguisher or an escape route with materials or tools. You might need that path in a hurry.
- Report hazards: If you see an overflowing bin or a leaking fuel container, tell your supervisor immediately. Do not wait for someone else to do it.
Ask the crew
- Where is the nearest fire extinguisher to our current work area?
- Where is the only place you are allowed to smoke on this site?
- If you see a pile of dry wood near a welding task, what should you do?
