ASP practice question: Hot work

Question of the Day for Sunday, 1 November 2026

ASP · Fire Prevention and Protection
A maintenance welder must weld a bracket to the steel wall of a warehouse office. Cardboard record boxes are stacked against the other side of that wall and cannot be moved today. Under 29 CFR 1910.252, which precaution addresses this hazard?

Explanation

When welding on a metal wall, combustibles on the other side can be ignited by conduction or radiation, so they should preferably be relocated, and where they are not, a fire watch must be provided on the opposite side from the work. A watch on the welding side cannot see a fire starting behind the wall, which is the tempting error. Wetting the floor and shielding the welding face do not stop heat conducting through the steel to the boxes. Source: 29 CFR 1910.252(a)(2)(x) and (a)(2)(iii)(A)(4).
