ASP practice question: Confined spaces
Question of the Day for Friday, 30 October 2026
ASP · Safety Programs and Concepts
On a subdivision project, a utility contractor must enter an existing manhole to tie a new lateral into an active municipal sanitary sewer. The sewer cannot be isolated because it is part of a continuous system, and upstream flows can surge after rain. Continuous gas monitors are commercially available. Under 29 CFR 1926 Subpart AA, what must the entry employer provide once entry is authorized?
Explanation
When the employer shows that isolation is infeasible because the space is part of a continuous system such as a sewer, the construction rule requires continuous monitoring of entry conditions where entrants work. It also requires an early-warning system that continuously monitors for non-isolated engulfment hazards. Periodic testing is allowed only if continuous monitoring equipment for that hazard is not commercially available, which is not the case here.
