ASP practice question: Universal precautions
Question of the Day for Saturday, 24 October 2026
ASP · Industrial Hygiene and Occupational Health
After a phlebotomist's needlestick, the occupational health provider completes the post-exposure evaluation on 3 March. The provider's full clinical notes include the employee's HIV and hepatitis test results and diagnoses. What must the employer give the employee, and by when?
Explanation
1910.1030(f)(5) requires the employer to obtain and give the employee a copy of the healthcare professional's written opinion within 15 days of completing the evaluation, and the post-exposure opinion is limited to stating that the employee was informed of the results and told of any conditions needing further evaluation or treatment; all other findings and diagnoses remain confidential and are not included. Passing the full clinical notes through the employer is the tempting error, but it breaches the limit on content. The 10 working day period applies to offering hepatitis B vaccination, not to written opinions. Source: 29 CFR 1910.1030(f)(5).Practise more questions like this
