Sandstorms and High Dust: When to Stop
If you cannot see clearly or the wind is too strong, stop work and seek shelter immediately.
Why this matters
- Sandstorms are a common risk in the Gulf. They can arrive quickly and reduce visibility to nearly zero in minutes. This makes driving, crane operations, and walking on site extremely dangerous.
- Dust and high winds also create flying debris hazards and can cause respiratory issues. When the horizon disappears or the sky turns orange, you must act fast to protect yourself and your equipment.
Talking points
- Watch the horizon: If you see a wall of dust or the sky changing color, notify your supervisor immediately.
- Stop all lifting: Crane operations and MEWP work must stop when visibility is poor or wind speeds exceed safe limits.
- Secure the site: Tie down loose plywood, sheets, and tools so they do not become flying missiles in the wind.
- Find solid shelter: Move to a permanent building or a heavy cabin. Do not stay under temporary structures or near scaffolding.
- Vehicle safety: If driving, move off the road to a safe area, stop, and turn on your hazard lights. Do not attempt to drive through zero visibility.
- Protect your body: Wear your safety goggles and a proper mask to keep dust out of your eyes and lungs.
Ask the crew
- Where is the nearest solid shelter for our team right now?
- What loose materials in our area need to be secured if the wind picks up?
- If you are operating a machine and can no longer see the spotter, what is your first action?
