Prevent the Drop: Tools, Zones, and Toe Boards
If you are working above, nothing should be able to fall; if you are below, stay out of the red zones.
Why this matters
- Even a small nut or a light spanner falling from the 10th floor can kill a person instantly. In our environment, wind and sweat make tools slippery and increase the risk of accidents.
- On busy Gulf sites, many teams work at different levels at the same time. A tool dropped by a mechanical team can hit a civil worker on the ground. We use three layers of protection: tethering the tool, toe boards on the edge, and exclusion zones below.
Talking points
- Use tool tethers (lanyards) for every hand tool. Connect them to your wrist or the structure, not just your belt.
- Inspect every scaffold platform to ensure toe boards are installed and there are no gaps for debris to slide through.
- Keep your work area clean. Do not leave loose bolts, scrap metal, or water bottles near the edge of a slab.
- Never enter an 'Exclusion Zone' marked with red/white tape. These zones exist because work is happening overhead.
- Use proper lifting bags or buckets with closed tops to move small items up and down. Never carry loose items in your pockets.
- If something does slip, shout 'Below!' or 'Paani!' (or your site's emergency word) as loud as possible to warn others.
Ask the crew
- Are all your hand tools tethered right now?
- Where are the exclusion zones located on this site today?
- What should you do if you see a toe board is missing on a high platform?
