Confined Space Entry: Permits, Gas Testing, and Standby
Never enter a confined space without a valid Permit, a fresh Gas Test, and a dedicated Standby Person waiting outside.
Why this matters
- Confined spaces like tanks, manholes, and deep pits are among the most dangerous places on site. The air inside can look clear but contain no oxygen or poisonous gases that you cannot see or smell.
- If you enter without a plan and collapse, anyone who tries to save you without the right gear will also die. Most confined space deaths happen because people try to be heroes without a plan.
Talking points
- Check the Permit: Do not enter unless a valid 'Confined Space Permit' is signed and posted at the entrance today.
- Gas Testing is Mandatory: The air must be tested with a calibrated monitor before you enter. If the work stops for a break, the air must be checked again.
- The Standby Person (Hole Watcher): One person must stay outside the entrance at all times. They must never leave their post while someone is inside.
- Communication: You must be able to talk to or see the Standby Person at all times using a radio, hand signals, or voice.
- No Rescue Heroics: If the person inside collapses, the Standby Person must NOT enter. They must call the emergency team immediately. Entering to help without breathing gear makes you a second victim.
- Equipment Check: Ensure the tripod, winch, and rescue harness are ready and in good condition before you step down.
Ask the crew
- Who is our dedicated Standby Person for this task today?
- What should you do immediately if the gas monitor starts to alarm?
- Is the Standby Person allowed to leave the entrance to fetch a tool or water?
