Choosing and using the right fire extinguisher
Choose the right extinguisher for the fire type and use the PASS method.
Why this matters
- A small fire can become a disaster in seconds. If you grab the wrong extinguisher, you can make the situation much worse. Using water on an electrical fire can lead to a fatal electric shock. Using the wrong gas can spread the flames instead of killing them.
- You must know your equipment before an emergency happens. In the heat of the moment, there is no time to read the instructions. Knowing the right tool for the job saves lives and protects our site.
Talking points
- Check the label before you touch the extinguisher. Not all extinguishers work on all fires.
- Water extinguishers are for wood, paper, and plastic only. Never use water on electrical equipment or burning oil.
- Powder extinguishers are the most common on site. They work on most fires including wood, liquids, and electrical risks.
- CO2 extinguishers are best for electrical fires. They do not leave any residue and do not conduct electricity.
- Remember the PASS method: Pull the pin. Aim at the base of the fire. Squeeze the handle. Sweep from side to side.
- Always keep your back to an exit. Do not let the fire get between you and your way out.
- If a fire is larger than a small waste bin, do not try to fight it. Sound the alarm and evacuate immediately.
Ask the crew
- Where is the nearest fire extinguisher to your current work area?
- Which extinguisher should you never use on an electrical fire?
- What does the first letter in the PASS method stand for?
