US salaries: BLS data for May 2025
The most reliable US pay data comes from the BLS Occupational Employment and Wage Statistics (OEWS) program, which surveys employers rather than individuals. In May 2025 there were 140,610 occupational health and safety specialists (SOC 19-5011) in the US, with a median annual wage of $90,150 and a mean of $93,860.
Occupational health and safety technicians (SOC 19-5012) are a smaller and lower-paid group: 30,590 jobs in May 2025, with a median annual wage of $61,560 and a mean of $68,120. The spread inside each occupation is wide, so the percentiles below are more useful than a single average when you judge an offer.
- Specialists, 10th percentile: $55,000 (BLS OEWS, May 2025)
- Specialists, 25th percentile: $69,560
- Specialists, median: $90,150
- Specialists, 75th percentile: $111,690
- Specialists, 90th percentile: $134,950
- Technicians, 10th percentile: $46,280; median: $61,560; 90th percentile: $100,160 (BLS OEWS, May 2025)
Highest-paying US industries and states
Industry matters as much as job title. In the BLS OEWS May 2025 industry data, the highest annual mean wages for safety specialists were in energy and research. Most specialists, though, work in government, consulting and construction, where pay is closer to the national figure.
By state, the District of Columbia had the highest annual mean wage for specialists in May 2025 at $115,070, followed by Washington ($106,620), Massachusetts ($106,540), California ($106,470), Rhode Island ($105,940) and Colorado ($105,830). Texas had the most specialist jobs (17,920, mean $84,410), then California (16,230). These are means, not medians, and living costs differ sharply between states.
- Pipeline transportation of natural gas: $123,690 mean (BLS OEWS, May 2025)
- Natural gas distribution: $121,390
- Support activities for water transportation: $121,110
- Oil and gas extraction: $120,700
- Petroleum and coal products manufacturing: $120,520
- Scientific research and development services: $118,800
- Largest employers: local government (9,560 jobs, $86,300 mean), management, scientific and technical consulting (8,400 jobs, $86,500), the federal executive branch (7,410 jobs, $104,690) and nonresidential building construction (7,050 jobs, $102,750)
What safety professionals report in salary surveys
Professional salary surveys ask practitioners directly, so their figures run higher than BLS: respondents tend to be experienced, certified and engaged with the profession. Use them alongside BLS, not instead of it.
BCSP and the National Safety Council's 2023 safety, health and environmental salary survey (published November 2023, more than 9,600 respondents) found a median salary of $105,000 for full-time safety professionals. The median pay increase was 4 percent, and 45 percent of respondents held the CSP.
EHS Today's 2025 National Safety and Salary Survey (published November 2025, 662 respondents) reported that the average salary for a safety professional rose 12 percent over the previous year. Its averages by title were $102,154 for an EHS professional, $111,664 for an EHS manager or supervisor and $161,036 for an EHS director or VP. By industry it reported $109,139 in construction, $111,740 in heavy manufacturing and $98,960 in light manufacturing.
How credentials relate to pay
The clearest published figures come from BCSP's 2023 survey: respondents holding at least one safety certification earned roughly $18,000 more than those without one, and the Certified Safety Professional (CSP) typically added over $30,000 to the salary of a practitioner with no other credentials. These are associations in self-reported survey data, not a guaranteed raise, and experience and seniority rise alongside certification.
None of the sources on this page publish a separate pay figure for the ASP, CIH, CHST or NEBOSH qualifications, so we do not quote one. BLS notes only that employers may prefer or require professional certification. For readers outside the US, one link is useful: BCSP lists the NEBOSH National or International Diploma, CMIOSH and CFIOSH among the qualified credentials that can satisfy the CSP's credential requirement.
UK salaries: ONS data for 2025
The UK's official source is the ONS Annual Survey of Hours and Earnings (ASHE). In the 2025 provisional results, full-time health and safety managers and officers (SOC 2020 code 3582) had a median gross annual pay of £46,444 and a mean of £49,657, across about 59,000 full-time jobs. The 25th percentile was £37,925 and the 75th was £57,141.
Across all employee jobs in the same occupation, including part-time, the 2025 median was £44,551. ASHE covers employees only and reports gross pay before tax, so contractor day rates are not included.
UAE, Saudi Arabia and Qatar: recruiter estimates
There is no official government wage series for HSE roles in the Gulf, so the figures below are recruiter estimates. Hays reports each figure as the total fixed monthly salary package as of Q4 2024, built from its job listings, job offers and candidate registrations. Its guides cover senior HSE roles only, so do not read these as entry-level pay.
We could not find a public recruiter salary guide with HSE figures for Qatar, so we do not quote one. Job-board averages exist but are often based on a handful of profiles.

How to raise your pay
The data points the same way in every market: pay rises with industry, seniority and evidence of competence. These are the levers you control.
- Target higher-paying sectors. In BLS data, energy, pipelines, research and the federal government pay specialists well above the national median.
- Plan your credentials. In the US route, that usually means the ASP after your first year of qualifying experience and the CSP after four. Check BCSP's current requirements before you apply.
- Show results, not duties. Put numbers on your CV: inspections completed, incident rates reduced, people trained. HSE HUB's Career Prep CV audit gives your CV an ATS score with specific fixes for HSE roles.
- Rehearse the conversation. HSE HUB's mock interviews let you practice answers to technical and behavioral HSE questions before the interview that decides your offer.
- Prepare for the exam properly. HSE HUB's ASP and CSP practice questions are weighted to BCSP's published blueprint, with an explanation for every answer, so you can find weak domains early.
- Compare like with like. Gulf recruiters quote total fixed monthly packages, so add up base pay and fixed allowances before you compare two offers.
