Reading the SDS: Know the Chemical Before You Open It
Always read the SDS before you open a chemical container to know the risks and the right PPE.
Why this matters
- Chemicals are common on our sites for painting, cleaning, and waterproofing. Many of these liquids and powders look safe but can cause skin burns, breathing issues, or long term illness if used the wrong way. The Safety Data Sheet, or SDS, is the only way to know exactly what is inside.
- Opening a drum or bag without checking the SDS is dangerous. You might need a specific type of glove or a respirator that a normal dust mask cannot replace. The SDS tells you how to protect yourself and what to do if something goes wrong.
- In the high heat of the Gulf, some chemicals become more dangerous or can catch fire more easily. The SDS explains how to store these materials safely to prevent fires or toxic fumes in the store room.
Talking points
- Check that the name on the container matches the name on the SDS exactly.
- Look at the hazard symbols: the red diamonds: to see if the chemical is flammable, toxic, or corrosive.
- Go to the PPE section to find the correct gloves: not all gloves protect against all chemicals.
- Check if you need a respirator or if working in the open air is enough to stay safe.
- Read the first aid section so you know what to do if the chemical touches your skin or eyes.
- Keep a copy of the SDS near where the chemical is being used for emergency use.
- Never mix chemicals together: the SDS will tell you which materials are dangerous to combine.
Ask the crew
- Where is the SDS folder kept on this site for the chemicals we use?
- If a chemical is 'corrosive', what does that mean for your skin and eyes?
- Where is the nearest eye wash station or clean water source in our work area?
