Hand Tools: Right Tool, Right Way
Inspect every hand tool before you use it and never force a tool to do a job it was not made for.
Why this matters
- Hand tools are everywhere on our site. Because we use them every day, we often forget how dangerous they can be. A hammer with a loose head or a screwdriver used as a chisel can cause serious injuries.
- Many accidents happen because workers try to save time by using the wrong tool. A tool that slips or breaks can cause deep cuts, broken bones, or eye injuries. We must treat hand tools with the same respect as heavy machinery.
Talking points
- Check the handles: Look for cracks, splinters, or loose fittings.
- Never use mushroomed heads: If a chisel or punch has a spread out, flattened head, it can shatter.
- Keep tools clean: Oil or grease on a handle makes it slippery and dangerous.
- Use the right size: A wrench that is too big will slip and round off the bolt.
- Cut away from your body: When using a knife or sharp tool, always move the blade away from yourself.
- Report and replace: If a tool is broken, do not try to fix it with tape. Give it to your supervisor for a replacement.
Ask the crew
- What should you do if you find a hammer with a loose head?
- Why is it dangerous to use a screwdriver as a pry bar?
- Where do you go to get a tool replaced if it is damaged?
